this is kpix5 news on the cw. >> i find that hard to believe, actually. because he's a good kid. >> a bay area basketball star turned murder suspect. why police think he could be connected to a killing thousands of miles away. >> and talk about hot pants. police are on the tail of a gang of thieves with a pretty sophisticated m.o. and sophisticated taste in jeans. >> and many of us use them once a day, but many california bridges are in the same dangerous condition as the one that came down in washington state last night. good evening, i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. it's a bizarre plot and the investigation led police to the mob and a georgia rapper. kpix5 reporter is connecting the dots live outside where he used to play. alyssa. >> liz, reports coming out

that the mobster allegedly hired hitmen to kill the rapper because he told police about a stolen car. police arrested a group of men they believe were involved in the plot, including a bay area star athlete. the star basketball player from san francisco state is behind bars, facing a murder charge. the team's high scorer who just wrapped up his senior season and made headlines for this buzzer beating half court shot white was arrested in his hometown of pacifica on april 24. >> he was arrested in our county on a warrant for his arrest out in the state of georgia for the crime of murder. >> san mateo district corner said he was extradited may 13. his real name is melvin bernel, iii. >> i find that hard to believe

because it doesn't stand right with him, because he's a good kid. >> the neighbor has known white since he was a kid and says if convicted, it would be devastating to the community that has been cheering him on all these years. >> terrible. i know he has a young family and a wife and hopefully, i wish him all the best. >> white grew up in pacifica, the second leading scorer in san mateo where he graduated in 2006. he went to texas tech on a full scholarship and roomed with michael crabtree. he took three seasons off and decided to give it one final shot at san francisco state. after becoming a father. he spoke with kpix back in february about that decision. >> for me to tell him to finish school and me not finishing up my school or playing career, that's a big thing just looking at him. >> a hard working student and athlete who could be looking at

hard time. >> we learn with athletes sometimes is when you treat somebody like they are special and unlike others, they think sometimes they are above the law and the answer is, th don't know whether they are prints, if you commit a crime, we will put you in jail like anybody else. >> i tried speaking with white's family, but nobody was home and my phone calls have not been returned. the 25-year-old is due in court may 31. live in san francisco, kpix5. >> all right, elizabeth, thank you. a bay area teenager known for her musical talents and academic ambitions was remembered tonight. 19 years after her still unsolved murder. 14-year-old jenny lynn, was killed in her home in may of 1994. this evening, family and friends held a ceremony and a walk through town. lynn's father tells kpix5 the memorial services and music programs held in jenny's name

help him cope with the loss of his daughter. >> we can't get up without thinking of jenny every morning. however, the only way we can come along so far is trying to keep ourselves busy and do things in a more positive way to try and give back to the community. >> the jenny lynn foundation has provided more than 3500 students with music lessons and camps over the years. police are looking for a grown up of thieves who snatched thousands of dollars worth of upscale jeans from store shelves all over the bay area. kristen ayers on where those hot pants might soon end up. >> reporter: a high end grab and go at a luxury denim store. >> very sophisticated. they knew exactly what to do. >>four men, six women, $5,000 worth of expensive jeans stolen from this true religion store

in livermore. >> it's happening all over the bay area. all your high end outlet stores and retail stores are having grab and runs. >> same thieves who robbed the store are connected to a string of thefts from gillroy, to this store in walnut creek. >> last year, a band of thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of victoria secret lingie from stores in palo alto. our under cover investigation a short time later found tons of vuk victoria secret bras and underwear for sale. one with the inventory tag still attached. >> this one has the tag on it still. you can't sell that. >> some of the goods will be sold online. we discovered batches of true religion jeans, brand-new. tags still on. police say they are on to the thieves. >> investigators do have

leads. they are actively working on that. >> kristen ayers, kpix5. >> police in livermore think the suspects took off in two get away cars. a 1980s red toyota corolla and a silver ford taurus. the woman accused of planting tainted orange juice will not face charges. romi was arrested last month on suspicion of attempted murder. firefighters initially said the bottles contained a lethal dose of rubbing alcohol, but it was actually just plain old vinegar. and prosecutors say they could not rule out the possibility that it might have occurred naturally through fermentation. crews in washington state are scrambling to find a replacement for that collapsed i-5 freeway bridge. the well traveled span that fell into the skagit river is between the main artery between seattle and canada.

the collapse is also raising questions about the nation's aging infrastructure. >> the national transportation safety board is inspecting a bridge collapse in washington state. surveillance video captured the impact when a an overhead gerter thursday. a 160-foot section of interstate 5 and two vehicles plunged into the water below. >> all the air bags went off and the car started to rush with water. that is when i thought i wasn't going to make it. >> bryce managed to get out through the passenger door and waited for rescue boats. now officials are scrambling to find alternate routes and temporary fixes like a prefabricated structure. >> you cannot over state the importance of this corridor to washington state to our economics. >> according to the latest national report on bridges, more than 66,000 across the united states are considered deficient, requiring regular

inspections. nearly $85,000 are functionally obsolete, meaning they do not meet current design standards. that includes the bridge. >> if it had been built today, it would built to different design standards. >> authorities say the bridge is actually in good shape for its age. >> a lot of bridges with a lot lower rating in our system and i-5 itself, they are higher priority to replace. >> federal government has promised washington state $1 million in emergency funding. the governor says it will cost $15 million to repair the bridge. teresa garcia, kpix5. >> more than 30 million americans will travel this memorial day weekend and many will drive over a bridge in need of repair. kpix5's linda yee found out the span that collapsed last night has the same federal rating of at least one bay area bridge. >> the western span of the bay

bridge is considered functionally obsolete because its design is outdated. for example, five lanes of traffic, but no shoulders for emergency parking. but unlike the washington bridge, which is also outdated, that doesn't make the bay bridge in danger of collapse. >> when you say functionally obsolete, that has nothing to do with the structural integrity of the bridge. >> the american society of engineers says 17% of california's 25,000 highway and toll bridges are outdated. cal trans says it regularly monitors the bridges. >> we are always updating our standards and always bringing in the latest we know about bridge design and practices. >> there's more concern for bridges that are structurally deficient. 12% of the highway bridges fall in that category. for example, the old doyle drive, which has been torn down and being replaced with one of

the worst structurally deficient bridges. the federal highway administration gave it a rating of 2 out of 100. the bridge in washington that collapsed was rated 50. cal trans follows certain itdecide which is torn down or retrofitted. >> there are a lot of accounts that go into effect. the amount of traffic, its location, there are all sorts of things. it doesn't necessarily mean that it is in any imminent danger, it just means that certain bridges are going to require more work than others. >> major work on all the bay area toll bridges is on going. it has been replaced, so too the new eastern span of the bay bridge is set to open in the fall. all new, all designed to withstand a major earthquake. so while the western span may be called functionally obsolete. it is also retrofitted and cal trans tonight says it is confident it will also

withstand a major quake. in san francisco, linda yee, kpix5. >> the ohio company that made the busted bolts for the new bay bridge is defending its work. 32 of the giant bolts snapped after they were tightened. failure has cal trans scrambling to install a fix and time for the bridge's scheduled labor day opening. the ceo of dice incorporation says twere manufactured according to cal trans requirement, which are detailed in a cal trans report. >> it was concluded that the dyson corporation to the specifications requested. >> cal trans is pointing footer of the report that concludes the bolts were not manufactured to a consistent hardness. they are expected to give an update next week on the fix. >> and we are learning more about the damage from last night's strong earthquake in northern california.

magnitude 5.7 quake cased houses to sway, knocked a lot of stuff off shelves and walls. at least 600 people lost power. 300 others were under a boil water advisory. about four dozen aftershocks have been reported, including a 4.6 magnitude quake that shook this morning. overall, no serious damage, but many people say they were pretty shaken up. >> at first i felt the table move, because i was playing a game and i looked at the wall. i heard the walls creek. i thought somebody hit our house with their car. >> i felt the coucgo from side to side. >> yeah, check out this surveillance video from a supermarket. 5.6 quake rattle the store shelves. almost all the contents dropping, despite the damage, no injuries have been reported. >> a scare in the skies over london today as a smoking jet

and take a look at this. streaming from a british airways jet over london. the air bus was bound for norway. it developed some sort of technical trouble in both engines shortly after takeoff. officials shut the airport down as emergency crews waited for the plane to return. it landed safely a short time later. there are reports the plane may have hit a flock of birds, but that's not been confirmed yet.

now truck loaded with supplies from california is just hours away from arriving to oklahoma tornado victims. a couple is driving a uhaul truck full of donations collected by local military families. the couple transporting the boxes will work with an oklahoma city church to distribute the donations. 24 people, including ten children were killed by that tornado. pg and e is fighting what would be a record 2 1/4 billion fine for the deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. eight people died when a pipeline blew up into a wall of fire in 2010. the utilities issued response to the proposed fine. pg and e agrees there should be a penalty, but argues this goes overboard. in its filing with the state public utility, it is calling it excessive. pg and e could have known or should have detected that

defective pipe had been erroneously installed. critics want the shareholders to cover the cost of any fines. a brush fire crept close homes today. the fire first broke out along highway 4 near the intersection of interstate 80 just before noon. firefighters did stop the blaze from spreading to nearby homes on newberry avenue. it charred some backyard fencing and deck. some neighbors took matters into their own hands. >> my neighbors said he was out there hosing. i guess some of the fire down. i got close to the house. at least the house is still there, that's a good thing. >> fire scorched 3-acres. the cause is under investigation. authorities say the woman driving this truck suffered a medical condition and then hit the gas. that's why her truck flew off the freeway in livermore this morning. the truck plowed over an

embankment, across a field, before slamming into a backyard fence. the driver was not seriously injured. and what is driving this next car might surprise you a bit. high school students turned an old school volkswagen into an all electric car that is fueled solely by social media. shares and tweets turn into watts and sends a signal to the car to start running. the students in kansas city need enough social fuel to hit the road to d.c. and lobby lawmakers for more hands on education. >> amazing. twitter rules the world. can't control the weather, though. >> at least not yet. keeps the weather man employed. weather man likes that. >> so does weather man's family. >> peek outside tonight on a friday night heading into the holiday weekend. a lot of folks getting into san francisco. don't have the fast track.
